The Stanford Design Program has this long-running project called Illuminating Objects. Every student does it in the last three weeks of the first quarter.
The idea is to take an artist/designer that you love and make a lamp/light/glowy thing using their design language. This is my James Turrell lamp - aka my Turrellevision.
